Scam warnings that are particularly relevant in Cornwall and the South West right now:
Parking Fine Text Scam
Cornwall residents have recently reported text messages claiming they owe a parking penalty charge. The texts
contain links to fake payment websites designed to steal card details. Cornwall Council has issued warnings not
to click these links.
Fake Bank & Police Calls (Courier Fraud)
Fraudsters are calling people claiming to be from their bank, the fraud department, or the police. They often say
your account has been compromised and pressure you to withdraw cash or transfer money. Some even arrange
for a "courier" to collect cash or bank cards from your home. Devon & Cornwall Police continue to warn
residents about this scam.
Fake Security App Scams
A recent Devon & Cornwall Police alert warned about criminals convincing people to install fake security or
banking apps. Once installed, the scammers can gain access to personal and financial information.
Winter Fuel Payment Scam
Texts and emails claiming you need to apply for a Winter Fuel Payment are still circulating. They direct victims
to fake government websites that collect personal and banking details.
Delivery & Parcel Scams
With so many people using Evri, Royal Mail and DPD, scammers continue sending fake "missed delivery" or
"customs fee" texts. If you're expecting a parcel, always go directly to the courier's official website rather than
using a link in a text.
What Local Businesses Need To Be Aware Of
• Fake invoice emails
• Companies House filing scams
• HMRC refund or tax investigation emails
• Card payment diversion scams where suppliers suddenly “change bank details”
These are increasingly targeting small businesses.

• Install an app
• Click a payment link
• Move money to a “safe account”
STOP immediately and verify independently. Banks, HMRC, Companies House and the police will not ask you to
do these things over the phone.
